The head is the part of an amplifier system that does the actual amplifying of the signal and gets it ready for the speaker in the cabinet.
Unlike a combo amp, where the head and speaker/cabinet are both built in, when you go with a separate head, you can swap out which cabinets you use with it.
Using an amplifier head allows for more flexibility and the ability to interchange pieces.
